Humpback whales are one of the most magnificent creatures in the world. Seeing them up close and personal in all their glory is one of the most amazing things you can experience. Most whale watching companies offer an extensive range of tours from full day, three quarter days, dawn and half days depending on what you desire. When my family and I went out on a tour, we all had so much fun. Not only that, I left knowing a lot more about whales than ever before as well as felt a great appreciation for all animals. A buffet lunch was served on board so we all just relaxed and watched the humpback whales frolicking in the ocean. The first time I saw it coming up, my breathe was taken away. I was actually quite fearful that it would damage the boat. Later on I learnt that they give birth in the area then head towards Antartica. It was fascinating that they would travel so far to get to a destination. The calves stayed close to their mothers but they weren’t as shy as I thought they would be. The whales are quite acrobatic and would do some awesome maneuvers for their size!
As we live in Australia, we went up to Hervey Bay to witness these kings of the sea. They are only there from July to November, so we went up in August. We discovered that not only did Hervey Bay offer us the opportunity to see whales; it is the perfect holiday destination with an abundance of activities and restaurants. My family and I went to watch the whale watching twice! They appear to be used to the boats and have become comfortable with them. The first time we did a half tour and the second time we did a full day tour. Both experiences were incredible. You don’t just see whales – you can see turtles and dolphins. You leave feeling inspired to help and protect them. I have now become an advocate for the majestic creatures.
